Akon s-a nascut pe data de 14 octombrie 1981 in Senegal, unde si-a petrecut si o parte din copilarie, pana cand familia sa a imigrat ilegal in New Jersy, Statele Unite.
Numele sau real este incredibil de lung: Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, conform wikipedia.org. Pe site-ul artistului, apare doar Aliaune Akon Thiam.
In New Jersy, Akon a descoperit pentru prima data hip-hop-ul, dar lumea infractorilor, ajungand la inchisoare pentru furt de masini. Timpul pe care l-a petrecut in arest, l-a folosit pentru a-si lucra ideile muzicale. Dupa ce a fost eliberat, a continuat sa compuna si a inceput sa inregistreze, reusind astfel, in anul 2004, sa lanseze albumul sau de debut `Trouble`. Acesta include piese care au avut mare succes, precum `Locked Up`, `Lonely`, `Bananza (Belly Dancer)`, si `Ghetto`. `Locked Up` a ajuns in Top 10 US si in Top 5 UK. `Ghetto` a devenit hit radio, dupa ce a fost remixata pentru a include versuri ale legendarilor Notorious B.I.G. si 2Pac.
